Hackett Professor of Agriculture Chair and Director, The UWA Institute of Agriculture, The University of Western Australia

Over has more than 35 years’ experience in agricultural research, teaching and management in Australia and overseas. He has developed a national and international reputation in agricultural science, especially in the fields of crop physiology, production agronomy, farming systems, genetic resources, breeding research in cereal, grain and pasture legumes and oilseed crops.
He has conducted research on adaptation of crops to water deficits and the phenological, morphological, physiological, biochemical and genetic traits that enable crops to cope with various abiotic stresses.
As a result of Professor Siddique’s personal research and with others with whom he collaborates, Australia has become one of the major grain legumes exporting nations in the world. Professor Siddique’s pioneering research on chickpea has contributed enormously to the Australian chickpea industry, which is currently valued at more than $1 billion per annum.
He has published >1000 scientific papers, books and book chapters. Google Scholar h-index: 148 and citations: 81,204 (28 December 2025).
Professor Siddique was named a Highly Cited Researcher (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023) in Agricultural Sciences and double Hi Ci in 2021, 2022 and 2023 in Agricultural Sciences and Plant & Animal Science (Thomson Reuters/Clarivate Analytics).
• In 2025, Professor Siddique was awarded the 2024 Crawford Fund Medal in recognition of considerable and continued contribution to international agricultural research through the Crawford Fund’s programs and related activities.
• In 2025, Professor Siddique received the Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) (honoris causa) from Keral Agricultural University, India for advancing global agricultural science, building capacity, and transferring knowledge and technology to end user
• Professor Siddique was awarded the prestigious Western Australian Scientist of the Year 2023 by the Western Australian Government.
Professor Siddique is Fellows of The World Academy of Sciences, Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Australian Agricultural Institute, Foreign Fellows of the Indian National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Pakistan Academy of Sciences and African Academy of Sciences (first Australian to be elected to the Academy).
Professor Siddique was designated by United National FAO as Special Ambassador for the International Year of Pulses 2016.
Professor Siddique is the recipient of national and international awards including:
Sanquin Friendship Award from the Shaanxi Province China in 2023, Cuiying Chair Professor in the School of Ecology, Lanzhou University, China,
2019- Friendship Award from the Chinese Central Government (the highest award for a foreign expert) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to agricultural science and education in China over the years,
Professor Siddique was the Western Australian Indian of the Year 2021,
In 2014 Professor Siddique received the Western Australian Year of the Award (CitWA),
In 2011 Professor Siddique received the Member of the Order of Australia (AM),
2013- Dunhuang Award by China's Gansu Provincial Government
2001- Urrbrae Memorial Award for his contribution to Australian agriculture science and technology.
Professor Siddique has supervised >60 PhD students, and numerous undergraduate and Masters students, >60 postdoctoral researchers, many of whom now hold leadership roles in academia, government, and industry worldwide.
Currently he is supervising 30 PhD students at UWA.
He has developed an extensive network of scientists within Australia and a diverse range of overseas (China, India, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Malaysia, East Timor, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Europe, Canada, USA) collaborative research and educational projects. He holds several national and international committee positions.
